The Oregon Garden (of Eden)

The Oregon Garden (of Eden)

Apparently The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were pretty cool, but they’re not much to visit today. Consider instead, The Oregon Garden, an 80-acre botanical delight set in picturesque Silverton, voted one of the 10 quaintest towns in America. Set in the heart of the Willamette Valley, The Oregon Garden is about one hour south of Portland, and 30 minutes east of Salem. The Garden is comprised of several showcase displays like the therapeutic Sensory Garden, the Proven Winners’ Garden, the Train Garden, and of course, the Rose Garden.

But the Oregon Garden is much more than just flowers. It contains a Moonstone Boutique Hotel, wetlands that naturally filter the town’s water supply, a Tropical House packed with exotic plants, and the Gordon House, the only Frank Lloyd Wright house in the state. Also on-site are a gift shop, a Garden Café, a pub, restaurant and a spa. Enjoy a leisurely stroll through the grounds, or relax on one of the free narrated shuttle tours. Oregon boasts many beautiful parks and gardens, but the namesake Oregon Garden outshines them all.

Petal Pedal’s unique, petal-patterned course allows you to customize your route, both before and during your ride. Three “petals” extend in different directions into the scenic Willamette Valley, each returning to the Silverton center before heading out again. Riders can choose to ride each of the 3 ‘petals’ or any combination thereof.

The first “petal” climbs 3,000 feet over 16 miles to include the majestic Silver Falls. The second “petal’ covers 48 miles and 1,800 ft. gain through rolling hills, patchwork quilt views, and tiny townships. The third stretches out 30 miles over the flat valley floor, comprised of rolling farms, hazelnut orchards, and fields of flowers. Don’t even try to count the llamas.

Whichever course you plan to ride, you will encounter several opportunities to “reconsider”. Feeling strong – add another 20 miles. Hear the call of the beer – this way to the finish line. After each “petal”, you decide whether “she loves you, or she loves you not”…. and then you do what is best for you.
